Halloween DIY Home Decor!

Hello Tar Heels!
I hope you are all having wonderful semesters! It is certainly nice to be back from fall break… and that means Halloween is right around the corner! This is my first semester here for Halloween, and I am super excited. So, to contain some of my excitement and take a study break, I put together this Halloween DIY to spruce up your rooms! Even better, they are easy, fun, and college budget friendly!

This ‘candle’ jar is super easy and cute! All you will need is cups/jars of some sort (mine were 97 cents at Walmart), glue (spray adhesive would dry faster, but the liquid glue made a cool, drippy Halloween feel), a flame-less candle, and glitter. You may already have all of these things, making it even better.
1. Place enough glue in the jar to cover the bottom in an even, thin layer. You don’t want too much glue!
2. Swirl the glue around the jar. You can swirl all the way to the top, just the bottom, one side, whatever, get crazy with it 🙂
3. Add a generous amount of glitter and spin it around the jar, then dump out the excess.
4. Let it dry fully.
5. Add a flame-less candle. I am not sure how flammable glue is, so I wouldn’t recommend trying out a real candle (plus I live in an apartment style dorm).
Right now for Halloween, Walmart has flame-less candles for a couple dollars, with batteries included. That is what I have in my jar, and it flickers and has a warm orange glow. Not bad for a fake!

Next, we have this Halloween garland! You will need felt (about 20 cents a sheet), tissue paper (about a dollar), some sort of string (anything will do, I used twine that was about 3 dollars), scissors, a marker, and hot glue [be careful when handling not to burn yourself]. I got 6 sheets of felt, and even after making garland for all the doors, and our huge living room window, and my window, we still had left over pumpkins and ghosts! We ended up sticking them to the cabinets though, so it’s all good!
1. Get your hot glue heating up and draw ghosts, pumpkins, bats, and any other Halloween things you think of!
2. Cut the shapes out of the felt. Hot glue (or paint) facial features, stems, etc. to your creatures. *When I hot glue, I use a pencil or tweezers to press the glue
3. Using tissue paper, make tassels. I did this by folding the tissue paper in half and cutting a bunch of strips, leaving about four inches uncut before the fold. Then, I cut the paper into four large sections, and twisted it into a tassel. I don’t know if that made much sense, but whatever way you can fashion a tassel, go for it 🙂
4. Measure the amount of string needed to cover the desired hanging location, with some slack to make hang.
5. Hot glue the string to the backs of the creatures to attach them to the string. You can also hot glue the tassels if you don’t want them to slide around (that’s what I did).
6. Once the glue is cooled, hang in the desired location!

Walmart also had Halloween caution tape for 97 cents. It was 20 feet long, and we used it to decorate our outside door. We also got Halloween napkins there for 97 cents, as well as some candy. We took a small mixing bowl from our kitchen and put it in our fruit bowl with the candy. I purchased the bright flame-less candle (top right picture) from TJ Maxx a few days ago. Walmart also has Halloween colored outdoor lights for sale. We got a green and purple set for four dollars and ran it along our living room windows. They could also be used for decor in the spring. I think I might go back and get another color or two 🙂 My roommate also purchased a set of Halloween window stickers, sadly, they don’t show up in this picture 😦
So, that is it for today Heels! I hope you all have Halloween infused homes soon! Byeeeeeeeee ❤ Cyndel B.
